Diana Vreeland’s lunch rider has inspired me to distill my personal lunch habits to a similar list of rules:
LUNCH
1. Lunch is at home unless it’s super hot in my house and then it’s in a cafe with a fellow work-from-home friend or unless it’s a reporting thing. It is almost never arranged.
2. Lunch for Ms. Friedman and guests is NEVER ordered from the same place, if ordered at all.
3. Order lunch AT ANY POINT between 11:00 and 4:00. They probably won’t deliver, but that’s okay because you need to get out of the house because you’ve been glued to your computer for the past 6 hours. Say you want to eat lunch by dinnertime.
4. Foods Ms. Friedman routinely calls “lunch” (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO):

1. Toast with mashed avocado. ORDER EVERY 2 or 3 DAYS.2. Cold leftovers. ORDER EVERY 2 or 3 DAYS.3. Half a bag of Trader Joe’s trail mix. ORDER WHEN JUST BACK IN TOWN AND HAVE NO GROCERIES.4. Four olives and a spoonful of hummus and some tortilla chip crumbs and a whole colander of blueberries. ORDER WHEN CRAZY-BUSY ON DEADLINE.5. Egg sandwich and a coconut popsicle. ORDER WHEN HUNG OVER.6. Vegan wrap thing from the smoothie place. ORDER WHEN FEELING SUMPTUOUSLY CAPITALIZED.

5. When Ms. Friedman eats alone, the table is set as follows:

1. cup of black coffee that has grown cold2. precarious pile of unopened mail and papers and books and reporter’s notepads3. laptop of questionable cleanliness4. paper towel (for wiping drips of sriracha from laptop keys)5. phone, to right of laptop6. large bottle of fizzy water

NOTE: LUNCH IS NOT SERVED ON PLATES EVEN WHEN THERE ARE GUESTS, JUST AS IS.
