This piece is incredibly illuminating, but it omits a major source of journalism dollars: think tanks, investigative funds, nonprofits, and foundations. Their presence in journalism is only going to grow. This depends on your subject matter, and also comes with its own limitations, but I would urge any freelancer with a decent portfolio to look into organizations that may align with your work. There are fellowships, grants, stipends, and other types of money floating around from non-news outlets that care about journalism.
